Hi all. We sure hit the ground running on this trip. No time to blog, till now.
Day 1 was the day of no sleep. It started at 3:00 am, when I just couldn't sleep any more. Going through emails, checking face book, and drinking coffee seemed like a good place to start.
One email worried us. Sally had hit her head, and spent a day at the doctor dealing with dizziness. I waited till 9:00 to go see for myself, just how well she was doing. I told her it would be a waste of time for her to fly all the way there, only to stay in the hostel. She assured me that she was willing to fight me, if I tried to make her stay. "Okay, you're fine." was all I could say.
Back home, everyone was ready to go. Ashley was killing time by playing her guitar and singing.
We got on the road a little later than we hoped. Sally's girls packed her bags so heavy, she couldn't lift them. Not good for a carry-on only trip.
Ashley suggested we order wheelchair service for her. Brilliant!
At the airport, we asked for the service, it was front of the line all the way through. It was awesome, especially since we had to run through Seattle to make our connection. Sea-Tac, you are a cruel bastard. I am certain, this airport was designed by someone channeling the Marquis de Sade.
We changed money, $500 for ISK60,275 and grabbed our rental car.
Getting lost while driving in a foreign country is part of the fun, and we had a little fun along the way. As we circled Reykjavik, looking for our hostel, Julie pointed at a sign and said, "There's Johanna's hostel!"
We pulled in, and Jules ran into the office to see if she could find her. She told the lady at the desk, "I'm trying to find my friend, and her phone doesn't seem to be working." The lady asked for our friends name, told us what room she was in, then gave us a key to get in.
Two lessons here: Iceland is so safe, people are willing to think the best of you. And, Iceland is not a good place to hide out. You will be found.
We collected Johanna, and went to breakfast. It's 8:00 am September, 27 Iceland time. We have been up for 22 hrs.
Our group is starting to come together.
One flight, three trains, two very thorough TSA screenings, and a nice little 440 sprint later, we were on the flight to Reykjavik.
L-R Scotty, Ashley, Julie, Sally.
Customs in Iceland was quick and painless.
"Good Morning. How long will you be in Iceland?"
"10 days."
"I see you've been here before."
"Yes, I'm excited to be here again."
"Welcome back. Enjoy your stay."
