Dragging luggage makes us tired.
Our hostel,
was also a local hot spot,
for binge drinking.
They were also into important charity work.
Our tiny room.
This
is our
view.
Out for a walk.
Copenhagen is criss crossed with canals.
The palace.
We took a short cut through the grounds.
Old and new architecture combined.
Out of the other side, we were struck by this interesting building.
Especially the spire.
We were certain it was a church.
Later, we were told that it was a public building. A gift to the people, from Christian IV.
Bicycles abound, I'm convinced this two wheeled contraption would be certain death, for at least one of us.
Drawbridge tower.
Fresh fish.
Everything is just so cool, even "photo-bomb dude".
This is just tagging, we were on our way to see some real street art.
Here, in Freetown Christiania.
A 40 year old social experiment.
A group of communists took over an abandoned Navy base. And, declared themselves autonomous.
The Danish Crown decided to allow it, as long as they didn't become a problem, and has studied their ups and downs in trying to build a small society from scratch.
That is not to say that they haven't interfered from time to time.
Since 1971 there has been a brisk marijuana and hashish trade, tolerated by Danish authorities.
In 2004, a more conservative ruling party decided to close down the commune, by sending riot police in to crack skulls, knock down buildings, and chase everyone out.
It didn't work out well for anyone.
In the end, the cops found themselves barricaded outside a well fortified, self sustaining compound.
The residents were left with caring for their injured neighbors, and crumbling infrastructure.
As it sits now, the government and residents are in on-going negotiations.
The local businesses are on Christiania's side, as they bring a half million visitors a year into the area, mostly well behaved, and willing to spend money.
They have instated some simple, yet very strictly enforced laws.
The one you can't see is "No Gang Colors" updated from "No Motorcycle Gang Patches".
Now that's street art.
It was getting dark, and we were hungry. Too much to see for tonight. So we decided to try to take in the 80+ acres tomorrow.
A statue of Poseidon, that we missed on our way out.
"Angry butter at dinner = happy day tomorrow."
An old Danish proverb.
Okay, I made that up.
